the "first" meeting

Background: We hosted a community meeting with the help of our counterpart, Lilliana, of eleven (11) people across six (6) organizations. After initial introductions, each person or group spent ten (10) minutes completing the form we created, which included:

  • Organization

  • Name(s)

  • Position(s)/Role(s)

  • Mission

  • Organizational Activitieser

  • Recent Success

  • Current or Future Projects

Each person or group then presented their organization for five (5) minutes to the audience. The next five (5) minutes were spent asking questions. We concluded with a final summary and answering other questions.

Purpose:

  1. To introduce ourselves and Peace Corps

  2. To learn about organizations in two neighborhoods on Isla de Chira

  3. To knowledge-share between the organizations

Audience: Eleven (11) adults; Approximately age twenty-five (25) to sixty-five (65)

Time: 1.5 hours

Materials:

  • Sign-In Sheet

  • Paper

  • Pens

Lesson Learned:

  1. Cultural Difference: Bring a snack and drinks to community meetings. This is common and expected in Costa Rica.

  2. Ensure people from the same organization sit together to complete the activity together.

Next Step: From this understanding, we are now aware of the active organizations on the north west side of Isla de Chira. We have names and contact information, as well as other background information that will help with our initial analysis.
